White Residue on Faucets and Dishes in Cincinnati

What the white residue on faucets and dishes actually is

It is calcium carbonate. Sometimes magnesium carbonate mixed in. It came out of your water, not off your dishes.

Water moving through limestone and the sand and gravel aquifers under this region picks up dissolved calcium and magnesium. Both stay invisible while the water is cold and moving. The moment water evaporates or gets hot, the minerals run out of room and drop out as a solid. That solid is scale.

On shower glass you are usually looking at two things at once. Scale, plus soap scum, which is a different reaction. Calcium and magnesium bond with soap to form an insoluble film that clings to glass, tile and skin. That is why a bar of soap lathers badly in hard water and leaves a coating behind.

Hardness gets reported two ways. Grains per gallon (gpg) or milligrams per liter (mg/L). One grain equals 17.1 mg/L. The USGS classifies water as soft at 0 to 60 mg/L, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180, and very hard above 180. Converted to grains, that is soft up to 3.5, moderately hard to 7, hard to 10.5, and very hard above 10.5.

Why the residue shows up on hot water fixtures first

Calcium carbonate is backwards from most things you dissolve in water. It gets **less** soluble as the water gets hotter. Heat does not help it stay in solution, heat drives it out.

That is why the worst buildup is always on hot surfaces. The bottom of your water heater, heating elements, the shower door, the dishwasher element, the kettle, the coffee maker. Cold-side aerators still crust over, but that is plain evaporation and it happens much slower.

Temperature matters more than most people expect. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, a Department of Energy lab, ran the numbers in its 2013 report on water quality and residential water heating. In water at 170 mg/L, about 10 grains, a 50-gallon tank running at 140°F with 66 gallons of daily draw builds 0.06 inches of scale in roughly four years. Same water, same house, same usage at 120°F takes almost 30 years to build the same layer.

How hard is the water where you live?

These come from utility water quality reports, not from equipment sellers. The three groupings below are ours, for convenience. They are not the USGS classes. Every average on the first two lists sits inside the USGS "hard" band.

**Around 7 to 8 grains:** - Greater Cincinnati Water Works runs two plants. Miller, on the Ohio River, serves about 88% of customers at **7.4 gpg**. Bolton, on the Great Miami aquifer, serves about 12% at **8.2 gpg**. Bolton is lime softened at the plant and still comes out harder than Miller, which is not softened at all. GCWW as a utility serves Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Montgomery, Kenwood, Sharonville, Springdale, Forest Park and Anderson Township. GCWW does not publish a plant-by-community breakdown, so do not assume you are on the 7.4. If you want your own number, ask them or test it. - Northern Kentucky Water District: **about 7.3 gpg** average, seasonal range 4.6 to 9.8. - Butler County Water, including West Chester: **7.7 gpg**. City of Fairfield: **7.7 gpg**. City of Hamilton: **7.6 gpg**. - Warren County Water: **8 gpg**. - City of Dayton: **8.1 gpg**, also serving Kettering and Centerville. - Greene County: **8 gpg**, down from 27 gpg after a reverse osmosis plant phased in through March 2024. - City of Harrison: **8 gpg**, down from 21 gpg after its RO softening plant was fully activated on 3 October 2022.

**Around 9 to 10 grains:** - Indian Hill Water Works: **8.8 to 9.9 gpg**. - City of Wyoming, OH: **10.1 gpg**.

**Above 20 grains:** - City of Xenia: **23 gpg**. - City of Oxford: **20 to 22 gpg**. - Aurora, Indiana: **21.05 gpg**.

**No published hardness figure:** Middletown, Springboro, Trenton, Loveland, Wilmington, Lawrenceburg IN and Batesville IN.

Two notes on GCWW. Its own FAQ gives 137 mg/L, or 8 grains, for Miller and 147 mg/L, or 9 grains, for Bolton. The current annual water quality report gives 126 mg/L for Miller and 140 mg/L for Bolton, which it prints as 7 and 8 grains and which convert to 7.4 and 8.2. And GCWW disinfects with free chlorine, not chloramine, which is worth knowing if you are shopping filters.

At what hardness is hard water worth treating?

The engineering answer is about 8 grains. ASHRAE puts the line at 140 mg/L, which works out to 8.2 gpg, and PNNL cites that same figure as the point where softening or other treatment is often recommended.

That number is inconvenient for everybody selling softeners, because Cincinnati sits right on it. Miller water at 7.4 is just under. Bolton at 8.2, which is that same 140 mg/L, lands exactly on it. Nearly every suburb on that first list is within one grain of the line.

So here is the honest read. At 7 to 8 grains you will get spotted glasses, crusty aerators, film on the shower door and more detergent use. You will not get a wrecked water heater. Treatment at this level is a comfort and appearance decision, and it is a legitimate one, but it is not urgent.

Between 9 and 10 grains, in Indian Hill and Wyoming, you are past the engineering line and treatment starts to pay for itself rather than just looking better.

At 20 grains and up, in Xenia, Oxford and Aurora, it stops being a preference. Scale at that level is a maintenance problem you will pay for one way or the other.

If you are on Greene County or Harrison water and installed a softener before those RO plants came online, go check the hardness setting. You may be dosing for 21 to 27 grains on 8-grain water and burning salt for nothing.

What scale is actually doing to your water heater

It depends on what kind you have, and the differences are large.

**Electric storage tanks:** PNNL reports that in testing, efficiency held at the rated value until loose sediment reached and buried the bottom element. Cleaning the tank and replacing that element restored full efficiency. Hard water did not appear to shorten tank life. The element wears out sooner. That is the whole penalty.

**Gas storage tanks:** efficiency dropped from 70.4% to 67.4% over the equivalent of two years. Scale on the tank bottom acts as insulation between the burner and the water, which also traps heat in the steel and glass lining.

**Gas tankless:** this is the one that gets hurt. Efficiency fell from 80% to 72% over 1.6 years, then the units failed outright on a clogged pressure sensor or other control device and needed deliming. After deliming they came back to 77%, not 80%.

Now the part vendors leave out. Those figures come from a 2010 Battelle Memorial Institute study funded by the Water Quality Association, the trade group for companies that sell softeners. The testing was accelerated using water at 444 mg/L, about 26 grains, roughly three and a half times Cincinnati hardness, at elevated temperatures and draw rates. The findings are directionally real. The numbers do not transfer straight onto 7.4-grain water, and anyone quoting them at you as if they do is selling.

One more honest caveat, held to the same standard. A thin layer of scale is protective. PNNL cites corrosion cell testing done at A.O. Smith's own Corporate Technology Center, in water at 290 mg/L, about 17 grains and more than twice Cincinnati, where a film under 1/16 inch dropped the steel corrosion rate by 33%. Very soft water runs the other way. PNNL reports that in extremely soft water, such as water leaving a softener, tank lifetimes can be reduced by 50% or more. A.O. Smith's own manual says use of a water softener may decrease the life of the water heater tank, and it recommends inspecting the anode rod after three years, then annually. A softener is a trade, not a free win. If you install one, you own an anode rod schedule.

Is it hard water film, or is the glass ruined?

Rub the cloudy spot with white vinegar. If the haze lifts or clearly fades, it is mineral film and it is fixable. If nothing changes, the glass is etched, and etching is permanent.

Etching is a different failure from hard water film, and the appliance makers point at conditions most people do not expect. Bosch names poor glass quality, extremely soft water, high temperatures and long program cycles as the critical factors in glass corrosion. GE Appliances describes it as too much detergent in a soft water situation, or too little detergent in a hard water situation.

GE's framing, a detergent dose that does not match the water, is the one worth watching. That is what trips people up right after they install a softener and keep dosing at their old hard-water amount. Cut the detergent when you soften.

What a softener will not do

A softener does not remove PFAS. Hardness and PFAS are unrelated problems and they take different equipment.

EPA finalized maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS in April 2024, with a compliance date of 26 April 2029. In May 2026 EPA announced it will keep those limits, and separately proposed a rule that would let a system request a two-year extension to 26 April 2031. That extension is opt-in, not automatic, a system that wants it has to notify EPA by 16 November 2026, and as of this writing it is still a proposal. Plan around 2029.

Local systems testing above 4.0 ppt: GCWW's Bolton plant (PFOA 5.0, PFOS 5.2), Dayton's Ottawa plant (PFOS 8.81), Indian Hill (PFOS 11.7), Wilmington (PFOS 8.79), Hamilton's South plant (PFOA 5.30) and Clermont County's MGS plant (PFOS 9.22 to 10.9). MGS is Miami, Goshen and Stonelick, the three townships it serves.

Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is the usual fix. A point-of-use carbon filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS also reduces it. Check the package for NSF/ANSI 53 on a carbon filter or NSF/ANSI 58 on an RO unit. A softener is neither of those things.

What it costs to fix

If you are on Miller water at 7.4 grains, be clear with yourself about what you are buying. You are buying cleaner glass, less scrubbing and less soap. Not a rescue. If you are in Xenia, Oxford or Aurora above 20 grains, the math is different and it favors treating. And if PFAS is your actual worry, the thing to price is reverse osmosis, not a softener.
